Today, let’s use the Sweet Spot with God Framework (TM) to understand and play the message of John 15:16. Let’s start by reading the scripture in the New International Version (NIV).
John 15:16 NIV: You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
STEP 1: MENTAL – What key words stand out and what is going on?
The key concept is that God sought us out first so we could do something great. The other concept is that when we ask in God’s name, He will give it to us. A third concept is this idea of being “appointed.”
STEP 2: EMOTIONAL – What is my reaction or emotional response to this scripture?
Now read this same scripture in the New American Standard Bible (NASB), and as you read it, ponder your reaction or emotional response.
John 15:16 NASB: You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
What is your emotional response?
When I think of being thought of first, I feel special. When I think of being able to ask anything of God, as long as it is asked in His name for His will, and my prayer will be answered, I feel cared for. I feel more cautious about what I will ask because I would want to ask in His name. And I am excited to see it happen.
STEP 3: SPIRITUAL – What is God saying?
When I reflect on what God is saying, I can’t help but be touched with this kind of love, this kind of consideration, this kind of care, this kind of appointment. It reminds me of being picked on a baseball team in elementary school…to be picked was the most amazing feeling…to feel that special and important. I believe that we go through all of our lives carrying the need to be picked. When we don’t get that need met, we seek and seek and seek, and usually to no avail. But if we let God meet our need to be chosen and appointed, our souls will be quieted. We will also be able to take our eyes off of our neediness, to be able to care for others in Jesus’ name. And when we do that–when we bear fruit that will last–we will be given the privilege to ask anything in God’s name and He will give it. This just confirms again my understanding that God answers all of our prayers when pray the way we are supposed to pray–in Jesus’ name and in His perfect timing, perfect will, and perfect way. The big condition is that we be so connected to God, that we only know how and can ask in such a way that our prayers all always answered.
STEP 4: PHYSICAL – What is God saying to me personally?
Read the scripture one more time in The Message (MSG) and listen to what God is saying to you personally.
John 15:16 MSG: You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you.
What do you hear God saying to you?
I hear God saying to me to remember that I thought of me first; therefore, I am love and wanted. With that known, the only thing I can do is to be in connection with God to accept His choosing of me. I can also pray to be taught how to pray.
STEP 5: SOCIAL – What would happen in my life and relationships if I were to apply what I am hearing God say? How can I share what God is saying to me?
My relationships would improve because I would be responding to people from a place of completeness, not neediness, because I would live as if I was chosen. I can share what God is saying to me by baring the “fruit” that this scripture is talking about…and to pray earnestly for God’s perfect timing, perfect will, and perfect way in every aspect of my life.
STEP 6: PRAYER CONNECTION – Talk to God in prayer about His message to you through this scripture.
I accept that you have chosen me.
Work your perfect timing, perfect will,
and perfect way into my life
so that my life is a productive fruit tree
that blossoms everywhere I go.
Teach me to pray the way you want me to pray,
so that when I ask,
I ask with your will in mind
so that there is no doubt that you will answer.
I ask for this in Your name,
